This past fall the MERSD School Committee
appointed an Elementary Facilities Subcommittee to oversee the multi-year Elementary
Facilities Project. As a
first step in the process of determining a long-term plan for the
buildings, the Elementary Facilities
Subcommittee established the Elementary
Configuration Force to research and make a recommendation about the future academic configuration of the elementary
schools. They were charged with researching
and responding to the question:
Should MERSD maintain the current
neighborhood school model or move to a unified elementary model?
On Tuesday,
February 4th, the Elementary Configuration Task Force report was
presented and accepted by the School Committee.
In summary the report concluded: “Based on the learning from our
discovery, the task force recommends maintaining the neighborhood school model
for the two elementary schools in MERSD. While there is some traction and
interest in the unified elementary model, the collective consensus from a
variety of community groups clearly points to the neighborhood model.”
