Parent Advisory - 13 Reasons Why

Over the past few weeks, there has been a good deal of discussion in the media about a new Netflix series called 13 Reasons Why.  Principal Maino and Principal Puglisi have sent out advisories, but inboxes can easily get overloaded, so I thought I would resend the notice and extend the message to include our elementary families as well.   Additionally, I have included a few resources that you may find helpful.

Advisory on 13 Reasons Why:  As you may be aware, and as a result of articles in the news media, your child may be "binge watching" a recently popular Netflix series entitled 13 Reasons Why.  We feel it is important for you to be aware that this series has been rated by TVMA or Appropriate for children 16+ by Common Sense Media.  Common Sense Media describes this as a "very intense, dark story." The Netflix series is based on a popular young adult novel and it follows a group of high school students in the aftermath of a classmate’s suicide. Episodes contain graphic and significant content about suicide, rape, substance use and abuse, and bullying. If you are interested in reading their full review, you may access it here – Review of 13 Reasons Why .  While we are not in the business of telling you what your children can and cannot view, when we have information that is relevant to our kids, we feel an obligation to keep you updated.

Parent Resources

As always, if you have questions or concerns about the social emotional health of your student, please do not hesitate to contact your school counselor or building principal.
