This
week MERSD lost our beloved Joyce Swedberg. Joyce was a compassionate and committed
teacher who served the children and families of the Memorial School for over thirty-years. Joyce was a role model and mentor to both her students and
colleagues. She will be fondly
remembered for her humor, generosity, kindness and positive spirit. We will miss her greatly.
“Joyce’s passion was teaching. She will be remembered for the
impact she made on her students in special education, many of whom attribute
their current success to her patience, persistence and skill. Her winning of
the Massachusetts Teacher of the Year award is just a small indicator of the
difference she made in their lives. She was a role model and mentor to her
fellow teachers for more than 30 years, and was known as one of the most
skilled professionals in her field. She spent most of her teaching years in the
Manchester Essex Regional School District.
When she wasn’t devoting time to her students, Joyce enjoyed playing classical piano, making creations for her classroom, and spending time with her family. Her friends will remember her as a great listener with a wonderful sense of humor, often finding ways to make people laugh, even during difficult times. She was the best dance partner and movie companion her husband could have asked for.”(Excerpted from the Salem Evening News)
